Azure Virtual Network Name Resolution during outage

Hi,

In Auzre I have a VM running IIS and a SQL PaaS DB. I also have a virtual network which connects back to main site and assigns the VM two internal DNS servers.

Today our internet connection went down and this took the website running in the VM offline as the VM could not connect to the SQL DB.

As a temporary measure I manually set the DNS servers inside the VM to Google's DNS servers, rebooted the machine and all is well.

What is the best way to prevent this from happening in the future? Can I set my DNS servers as server 1 & 2 in the portal and then MS's internal name resolution server as a 3rd DNS server? Google DNS as a 4th maybe?

Could I set entries in the hosts file so that the other Azure services can be contacted.

Our top priority is uptime so I would rather remove the virtual network than have it as a single point of failure and dependency.

Thanks in advance.
